Anxiety Aunt: My neighbour is fired up about me putting dog poo in her bin, what’s her problem?

Dear Aunty, Recently I was walking my dog around my neighbourhood and, he, my dog that is, stopped to do his business. I did what any responsible dog owner should and picked the faeces up using a bag, tied it up and deposited it in a nearby bin that was sitting on the verge. A woman came out of her house and started yelling at me that I shouldn’t put it in her bin as the bin had just been emptied and would stink for seven days. I asked her if she would rather I just left it on the footpath for her or someone else to step in, but she said that I should pick it up and take it home. Which means I’d be walking for 30 minutes with a bag of dog poo in my hands. Later that day I saw that someone, I suspect her, posted on my community Facebook page saying it was outrageous that a dog walker should put poo in an empty bin. The reactions were mixed but quite a few people agreed with her. What do you think? Should I reply to the post to defend myself? Or was she in the right? Yours, Confused Dear Confused, Should you pick up the poo? One hundred per cent yes. Should you put it in a bin? Also 100 per cent yes. Should you put it in a residential bin that has just been emptied? Possibly not. But if there were no other options then probably yes. One apologises, Confused; One’s answers and advice aren’t usually this, well, confusing. But it is a tricky one as evidenced by the divided response on social media. One would hazard a guess that most dog owners and walkers would probably think picking up the poo and putting it in a nearby bin is the responsible thing to do, but homeowners without dogs would probably disagree. Technically the bins are owned by the council, but the woman is quite right that a bag of poo at the bottom of a bin sitting in the heat for seven days is not ideal. Add to that fact there is a high possibility that when other things are placed on top, the bag containing the excrement could well split or pop, causing a longer lasting impact that might require the entire bin to be cleaned to remove any lingering matter and/or stench. While it is not quite the same issue, your Aunt did recently have a neighbourhood tomcat spray over One’s flyscreen door. Along with leaving a mark, it also reeked to the high heavens. One has no idea who the cat belongs to or where it lives, but One has been googling anything that might deter the feline from returning and thinking he can re-mark his territory all over One’s property. One supposes that what it boils down to is that for a dog or cat owner, dealing with their own pet’s expulsions is just part and parcel of having them. You know when you buy a little bright-eyed, waggy-tailed pup or fluffy kitten that you are going to be up to your elbows in poop, kitty litter or dealing with the stench of wee in the carpet for the foreseeable future. But when it isn’t your animal, then it shouldn’t really be your problem. And while we can kind of control our gag reflex and revulsion when dealing with our own pet’s excrement, when it is an unknown animal’s poop stuck to the bottom of your shoe or stinking out your bin, it is far less palatable. So while One appreciates that you were trying to do the right thing picking up your dog’s business, Confused, One would suggest you keep walking until you pass a park or a public bin that you could use or take it back to your own home bin instead of using someone else’s residential bin. It may not be ideal if you still have a fair bit of walking to do to reach a suitable bin, but it is probably the best way to avoid creating neighbourhood strife.
