Ex-Docker Rhys Palmer reveals plans for WAFL return after horror motorcycle crash

Ex-Docker Rhys Palmer says he still hopes to return to football despite the sickening motorcycle crash that almost claimed his life.

Palmer says it was “touch and go” after his motorbike collided with a car on Canning Highway nearly two months ago.

“I can’t remember the accident… I woke up two days later,” he said.

“There was a big chance I wasn’t going to make it.”

The 30-year-old underwent emergency surgery and was placed in an induced coma due to the severity of his internal injuries.

“Once I came to and realised I hadn’t damaged my back or neck, I was in a pretty upbeat mood but then I saw the distress of my mum and dad,” he said.

Doctors couldn’t save the former Rising Star’s spleen, and he sustained heavy damage to his kidney and liver.

But despite the ordeal, Palmer is remaining positive and works almost daily with physiotherapist Rebecca Fanha on his rehabilitation with the hope of returning to the WAFL with Swan Districts next year.

“His mind wants to do many things and that’s typical of anyone who’s played elite sport,” she said.

“But because of his large scar down the front, that gets very tender and sore.”

“I still love the game, love to get back out there,” Palmer said.
