CONFIRMED: Western Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to make international debut in Australia’s final ODI
Western Australian 21-year-old sensation Cameron Green will make his international debut in Australia’s final ODI against India.
7NEWS reported yesterday that the prodigious all-rounder could replace either Pat Cummins (rest) or David Warner (groin) and Steve Smith presented the youngster with the 230th ODI cap before today’s match at Manuka Oval.
Smith headlines a string of changes including fellow WA all-rounder Ashton Agar also player as well as New South Wales seamer Sean Abbott.
Marnus Labuschagne and Matthew Wade were vying to replace Warner, with Queenslander Labuschagne earning the opening role alongside captain Aaron Finch.
The order reshuffle sees arguably Australia’s most exciting up-and-comer step into the middle order in Canberra.
Reports emerged before the second ODI that Green would replace Steve Smith, but the superstar’s recovery from an episode of vertigo prevented the 201cm Subiaco-Floreat product from playing in Sydney.
Over the last 12 months the youngster has burst onto the first class scene with four hundreds from his 19 debuts for WA at an average of 50, while managing 30 wickets during that period.
Australia’s strength and conditioning team will likely manage Green’s bowling load after a string stress fractures to his lower back, that originally forced the all-rounder to move from a fast bowling focus to improving his batting through the recovery.
Australia’s third and final ODI against India starts at 11:40 AM.
Meanwhile, India will also field a debutant as they look to avoid a series sweep, with left-arm seamer Thangarasu Natarajan earning a maiden call-up.
The 29-year-old plays for Warner’s Hyderabad Sunrisers in the Indian Premier League.
India have won the toss and elected to bat in the final match of the series.
There’ll be little time between series, with the first of three Twenty20s to be played at Manuka Oval on Friday night.
The second and third matches will return to the SCG, where the ODI series began.
