Fremantle star Murphy Reid has committed to the Dockers until the end of 2032 in a move the club has declared as crucial to thwarting a potential raid from Tasmania.

Reid’s contract wasn’t due to expire until the end of 2029 and that would have kept him out of the Devils’ sights for the initial list, but handed them the chance to target him into the future.

Fremantle were desperate for that to not even be a possibility after watching him having a massive impact in his first two seasons.

Fremantle Head of Player Personnel David Walls said it was a huge contract to get locked away.

“Murphy is really settled in WA and he’s made some great connections with players, coaches and staff at the Club,” Walls said.

“With Tasmania joining the competition, there is no doubt he would have been one of the most sought-after targets on their whiteboard, so locking him away long-term is a great outcome for the Club.

“The new deal will take him to 2032, which sees him through to free agency.”

It comes as the club confirmed highly-rated young defender Hugh Davies had locked in a three-year extension until at least the end of 2029, as flagged by the 21-year-old to The West Australian.

After becoming the Dockers’ youngest-ever Glendinning-Allan Medal winner in his side’s emphatic 70-point western derby smashing of West Coast Eagles, Reid joined midfield stars Caleb Serong (2034), Andrew Brayshaw (2031) and Hayden Young (2032) in being locked away with Fremantle beyond 2030.

The additional three years takes Reid to eight season at the Dockers and through to free agency.

Reid, the No.17 pick in the 2024 draft, has built on the back of his Rising Star debut campaign with an even more impressive sophomore season at Fremantle.

He tallied 26 disposals, eight score involvements and six inside-50s to go with 463m gained in Fremantle’s 10th win in 11 outings against their cross-town rivals.

After kicking 25 goals in 24 games last year, the Dockers have involved Reid in midfield more this year, with the young gun having upped his average disposals from 14.5 to 23.8 this year and more than doubled his per-game clearance numbers to an average of 2.1.

“Murph’s on-field ability is growing along with his growing connections with teammates,” Walls said.

“He’s really good at identifying their strengths and how he can best work with them to get the best outcomes for the team.

“His versatility and flexibility to play and learn multiple roles has been really important to us.

“Having another young Victorian re-commit long-term shows how much he is all-in at the club.”

Meanwhile, Davies is considered a big part of Freo’s future despite having not played at AFL level since his two appearances in 2024.

The key defender has starred at Peel this season, and Fremantle list boss David Walls acknowledged there had been interest from rival clubs before the new deal was locked in.

“He’s still just 21 years old and he’s been working his backside off on his defensive craft,” Walls said of Davies.

“His one-on-one contests have improved out of sight and with the form he’s been in at WAFL level this year, he has definitely attracted interest from other clubs.

“Hugh’s still relatively young for a key defender and our key backs, Brennan Cox and Alex Pearce, have been pretty durable and Oscar McDonald has performed really well when he’s played.

“He’s taking invaluable learnings from Pearce, Cox, Luke Ryan and Oscar every day and every session.

“Recommitting to the club for three more years demonstrates Hugh’s buy-in and belief in what we are building here, and we couldn’t be happier to have him come on that journey with us.”
