Fremantle star Hayden Young admitted it was a hard decision to notify club doctors he wasn’t feeling right a day after a head knock, but he is confident he’ll be back for a massive Brisbane clash.
Young missed last round’s win over Essendon and will miss Friday’s clash against St Kilda after experiencing delayed concussion symptoms.
The 25-year-old said he felt fine after training, revealing it wasn’t until the next day that he didn’t feel right.
“I had training on Tuesday and copped an elbow in the head, and it didn’t really rattle me that much at the time, and I finished training and felt all good,” he said on 96FM.
“But when I woke up the next day, I was a bit groggy and a bit concerned and thought ‘this isn’t normal’, and did the right thing even though it was a hard decision to make, and went to the doctors, and they assessed that I had a delayed concussion.
Despite his frustration of another injury setback, Young said it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to head knocks.
“It was really frustrating at the time because you never want to miss football, but the reality is my health is the most important thing, and I’m feeling a lot better now and feeling good,” he said.
With Caleb Serong now missing for likely at least the next fortnight with a calf injury, the Dockers, who have adopted the name Walyalup for Sir Doug Nicholls Round, will be desperate for Young to return for a blockbuster clash against Brisbane at the Gabba next week.
Young said he had no lingering symptoms and revealed captain Alex Pearce is a strong chance to return from a knee injury.
“Pearce is moving well, and he should be back in one or two weeks and is shaping up nicely,” he said.
