Australian Lucas Herbert has finished third in the International Series Macau golf tournament, won in a playoff by American John Catlin.

Herbert shot seven birdies and a bogey in a closing six-under 64 on Sunday to finish at 21-under par at the Macau Golf and Country Club, two shots off the pace.

Catlin, who shot a memorable 59 on Saturday - the lowest score in Asian Tour history - carded a five-under 65 to end on 23-under on Sunday, while Spaniard David Puig sizzled with a 60 to force a play-off.

After both birdied the first extra hole, Catlin cliched the title on the second play-off hole. He had earlier missed a chance to seal the win on the 72nd hold, pushing a five-foot birdie putt wide.

Catlin made history on Saturday with his 59 in the third round, when soft conditions allowed players to lift, clean and place their balls on the fairway.

"Still hasn't quite sunk in, and that was one heck of a battle," said the Californian, who came through the Asian Tour Qualifying School after a poor couple of years.

"If you had told me I would finish minus 23 on the tournament and I still have to be in a play-off, I'd be like, 'You're kidding'.

"It was special all week, I fought really hard. You know, I was battling all week long and to come out on top is really, really special."
