Almost two weeks after shocking allegations surrounding the Sydney Swans first emerged, Victoria Police have confirmed detectives are still actively investigating a report of sexual assault at an East Melbourne hotel.

The Sexual Crimes Squad investigation centres on an alleged incident at the Pullman Hotel on Wellington Parade in the early hours of August 17, after the Swans’ win over Essendon at the MCG.

A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed detectives were continuing to investigate and were still working to establish exactly what happened.

“Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad continue to investigate a report of a sexual assault in East Melbourne on 17 August,” they said.

“The incident occurred at a hotel on Wellington Parade in the early hours of the morning.

“The exact circumstances of the matter are still being established, and a number of people have been spoken to.

“As the investigation remains active and ongoing, we will not be commenting further including providing information on the specific circumstances of the matter, movements of detectives and any statements or interviews taken.

“Where there is information that it is appropriate and beneficial to release, then we will do so.”

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

The update comes after almost two weeks of intense scrutiny surrounding the Swans and five players, Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon and Riley Bice, who were suspended by the club for the remainder of the season over separate breaches of club standards.

The club sanctions were independent of the ongoing police investigation and were endorsed by the AFL. No charges have been laid against the players.

The Nightly is not suggesting any of the five suspended players have committed sexual assault or any criminal wrongdoing.

The five were also ruled out of All-Australian contention and will not be invited to attend the Brownlow Medal ceremony, although they remain eligible to win the award.

Further details surrounding the night have emerged since the scandal broke, including that Bice organised and paid for topless waitresses to attend the hotel.

Channel 7 reporter Tom Morris revealed Bice’s role on The Agenda Setters, while arguing senior teammates should have intervened.

“Riley Bice was the Sydney Swans player who organised the topless waitresses to come to the Pullman Hotel,” Morris said.

“He’s the one who paid the topless waitresses to come to the hotel.

“Riley Bice was the single teammate, who was given the responsibility of doing something that has ultimately blown up the club and potentially the careers of four teammates.

“He is not without fault but I think he’s a young player that’s been put in a position by older teammates that should know a lot better.”

The fallout has extended beyond the playing group, with coach Dean Cox among senior club officials who have spoken to police as detectives gather information about the alleged incident.

Head of football Leon Cameron, welfare boss Brett Kirk and media manager Tom Chadwick have also spoken to investigators. None of the four officials were involved in the alleged incident.

The Swans have maintained that only the five suspended players were in the hotel room among club representatives and have stressed that the disciplinary action taken against them related to breaches of club standards, rather than the allegations being investigated by police.

The scandal has also had consequences away from the field, with commercial relationships involving players and the club affected while the investigation remains unresolved.

Speaking earlier last week, AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said the league would wait for the police investigation to run its course before determining whether any further action was required.

For now, Victoria Police say the investigation remains “active and ongoing”, with detectives continuing to speak to people as they work to establish the exact circumstances of what allegedly occurred inside the East Melbourne hotel.
