Out-of-favour West Coast midfielder Elijah Hewett has turned his back on Victorian interest to re-sign at the Eagles until the end of 2030.
Hewett was out of contract at the end of this season, but has inked a new four-year extension that will take him through to free agency.
It ends months of speculation around the 22-year-old’s future, with the first-round draftee struggling to break into the team on a regular basis in 2026.
“I’m absolutely stoked to re-sign. This club means a lot to me as a West Coast boy,” he said.
“It’s been a challenging year, but I feel I’m a part of something bigger, which is the convincing factor.
“I love putting on the blue and gold and I’m keen to put my head down and get back to work.”
Hewett has played 40 games since he was drafted with pick No.14 in 2022, but missed the entire 2024 season with a serious foot injury.
The Swan Districts product played a career-best 20 matches last year but has struggled for a regular berth in 2026.
After a quad injury hindered his start to the year, Hewett played predominantly as a forward from rounds five to eight where he struggled in the unfamiliar role and was eventually dropped.
A strong stint in the WAFL and injuries opened up a chance for the explosive midfielder to return in round 14 where he played more midfield minutes, but he didn’t do enough to cement his spot in the side and was axed again after the 53-point loss to Carlton.
West Coast Eagles list boss Matt Clarke said Hewett’s extension reflected the club’s confidence in his character, work ethic and long-term potential.
“We are pleased to announce a four-year contract extension for Elijah Hewett, securing his future with the club until 2030,” Clarke said.
“Elijah has just turned 22, and we see him as an integral part of our future as we continue the rejuvenation of our playing list.
“The extension aligns with the club’s plans to build a strong and sustainable foundation for long-term success.
“Elijah has faced some challenges throughout 2026, however he has worked diligently with our football staff and remains committed to becoming the best player he can be.
“He is an exciting young talent with significant potential, and we are looking forward to seeing his continued growth and development in the years ahead.”
Hewett joins fellow 2022 first-round draftee Reuben Ginbey as well as injured forward-ruck Archer Reid in extending their contracts until the end of 2030. Pre-season sensation and wingman Ryan Maric have also re-committed this year, signing two year deals to tie them to the Eagles until the end of 2028.
