Meta’s Facebook and Instagram appear to be affected by massive technical issues as Tuesday night became Wednesday morning in Australia.

Thousands of Australian Facebook and Instagram users reported issues with the sites, but the technical problem appears to be a worldwide issue.

Users trying to log into Facebook were met with the error message: “Something went wrong. Please try again.”

According to monitoring service Downdetector, error reports spiked just before midnight, with more than 500,000 error reports logged.

Instagram users reported an issue with refreshing their feed, and reports indicate that Facebook’s messenger service was also impacted.

Soon after, reports began trickling in that TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, Google and YouTube had also been hit with technical issues.

By 11.30am in the US, Meta shares had fallen by 1.4 per cent and remained volatile.

Thousands flocked to Elon Musk’s X, which was still functioning, to complain about the outage.

Many X users joked Musk was behind the issue to drive users to his site.

Meta has not yet revealed the reason for the technical issue.
