St John Ambulance’s Erica Duffett and Jessica Wright were the winners of the Bridgetown-Greenbushes Shire Council’s 2021 Citizen and Youth Citizen of the Year awards. Ms Duffett, has volunteered with St John Ambulance for more than 13 years and has actively involved herself in a wide range of roles, such as ambulance officer, development officer, first-aid trainer and more. Ms Duffett said she credits a snake for getting her into volunteering. “I had to call the local snake catcher, who’s also a volunteer, I had to call him and after he sorted everything out he asked if I had my first-aid certificate,” she said. “I said no and he said ‘well if you ever want me to come and get another snake, do you first-aid’, so I did. “Then I got a phone call saying now you’ve done your first-aid how about becoming a volunteer. I did it and I’ve never looked back, it’s absolutely wonderful.” Ms Duffett said she enjoyed teaching first-aid across the South West and giving people the know-ledge to get through emergencies. “People have a habit of being unable to help because they haven’t got the knowledge, so they panic or do nothing,” she said. “It’s the knowledge, and with knowledge you get rid of some of the fear. “I love doing what I do, it doesn’t matter what class or accident I’m going to, for me it’s in my heart.” St John Ambulance Bridgetown sub-centre chairman John Jones said Ms Duffett was definitely deserving of the award. “I think she’s a bit embarrassed about getting awards for doing a volunteer job, but it certainly was deserved that’s for sure,” he said. “She’s certainly earned it over the years, she does an excellent job.” St John Ambulance Bridgetown sub-centre’s youngest volunteer Jessica Wright was the recipient of the Youth Citizen of the Year Award. Mr Jones said Miss Wright did not have her driver’s licence yet, so she works as a third officer in the back of the ambulances. “She certainly does her time attending in the back even though she’s a third,” he said. “She’s very good with patients and people, she knows her stuff, and she’s willing to learn. “Jessica is going to make a very good officer once she gets into that driving seat.” Other award winners included Senior Citizen of the Year Erica Gale, and Active Citizenship Group or Event winner the Jubilee Singers.
