Brian Alfred Parsons fined thousands of dollars for insulting police officer after being caught drink-driving

A Bridgetown man will have to pay thousands of dollars in fines after hurling insults at a police officer because of his English accent. Brian Alfred Parsons, 57, was driving home after a night out on May 7 when he was stopped by police about 10.30pm. He returned a blood-alcohol level of 0.142 when he was asked to take a breath test and had to return to Bridgetown police station for a further test. At the station, Parsons refused to do another breath test. When asked for the second time, the man began hurling insults at both officers present, including one because of his English accent. The court was told Parsons’ tantrum, which went on for more than 40 minutes, saw him consistently refer to the officer’s English background and call him a “slippery Pommy c...” a number of time. The public defender representing Parsons said he was “ashamed of his actions on that night” and was affected heavily by the medication he was on at the time. The court was told Parsons had also called the police station three days after the incident to personally apologise to the officers he had verbally abused. Parsons was fined a total of $2200 for the incidents and banned from driving for 18 months.
