Bridgetown High School student Eva Henderson-Mott is a State champion in the Australian History Competition

A bright young mind has gone down in history after taking out the top spot in a prestigious Statewide contest. Bridgetown High School Year 9 student Eva Henderson-Mott has been recognised as the WA champion in the Australian History Competition, which saw youngsters from across the nation take part in a quiz about the country’s past. Eva topped a large number of students from a range of schools from across the State, including from both metro and regional locations. Eva even scored higher than some of the other State champions, earning her the title as one of Australia’s most knowledgeable Year 7 to 10 history students. Rather than examining prior knowledge, the test requires the students to analyse and interpret sources and answer up to 50 questions. Eva said she was shocked and amazed to win the competition over so many students. “It was quite a shock to begin with, although I was, and still am, really thrilled,” she said. “What I enjoy about history is how everything forms a bigger picture. “Many events segue into one another and form a bigger thing which can then be broken down and analysed. It makes it so fun and interesting to interpret. “It also can tie in with other subjects that I enjoy and that makes it really fun to study.” Eva said she was thankful for her history teachers for the work they put in, particularly through an extension program that had been rolled out over the past two years.
