Bulldogs continue undefeated streak with 116-point win over Cougars

The seemingly unstoppable Bridgetown Bulldogs hosted Kojonup at home on Sunday afternoon as the wet weather from Saturday’s games continued to make controlling the ball a nightmare for teams. In typical wet-weather football fashion, neither side was able to hold onto the ball for long but Bridgetown’s efforts at the contests proved to be the key, with the home side able to gain ground and lock the ball in their forward half early, scoring seven goals to the Cougars’ one for the first term. As the rain poured on even harder in the second quarter, so did the goals for the Bulldogs as they tirelessly worked the ball forward and were able to convert and head into half-time with a comfortable 70-point lead. The second half was a similar story with Bridgetown able to be just clean enough with the ball in the wet to push their advantage and dampen the hopes of the Cougars making a comeback. Despite never giving up on the game and winning a decent share of clearances throughout the day, Kojonup were unable to withstand the dominance of the in-form Bulldogs with the final score ending 146-30. Bulldogs head coach Ray Masters said he attributed his side’s impressive form so far this year to team chemistry, but believed they were not out of the woods just yet. “It’s still challenging and we know teams are going to be coming at us after being in a similar situation in 2019, where we knew teams were getting closer and closer to us, so we’re trying to be positive but realise that teams are still coming at us,” he said. “Obviously Boyup Brook and Tigers are in really good form at the moment and you can never discount Southerners and Deanmill and all the rest. “Even today, we won by a fair bit on the scoreboard, but it was a competitive game.” Bridgetown’s Callum Jupp was named best on ground after the game as part of the 2021 Belt Up Round. Kojonup will now travel to Pemberton to face the Southerners this Saturday while the Bulldogs have their first bye of the season.
