People are being encouraged to get their hands dirty in an effort to clean up the Pemberton surrounds.

Kathy Barrett-Lennard and her husband Don Webster have started hosting Keep Australia Beautiful clean-ups, registered through their business People and Parcel Movers, and are encouraging people to get involved.

They held an informal clean-up on Sunday and will hold another on September 17 from the Grays Road turn-off on Vasse Highway into Pemberton.

“We then registered with Keep Australia Beautiful, who also put us in touch with MainRoads,” Mr Webster said.

“The advantage of being involved with Keep Australia Beautiful is they provided us with vests, gloves, bags and tongs.”

Ms Barrett-Lennard said the most common litter they found on the side of roads was coffee cups, cans, sandwich packets, plastic bags and take-away packaging.

“We’re hoping that by doing this, as people pass this pristine area, they are less inclined to litter,” she said.

She added people could help keep the region litter-free by maintaining the kerbs outside their houses.

“If you can’t come along on the weekend, help us by not littering and taking care of the area around your own home,” she said.
