In a thrilling opening to the 2022 Lower South West Football League season, Deanmill Football Club have started their year off in the right way after a hard-fought win over Southerners in Pemberton, 11.18(84) to 9.2(56). With a massive crowd in attendance, both teams took to the field knowing it would not be an easy match by any stretch. As the first quarter started both sides immediately began putting a great amount of physical pressure on each other to try to gain the upper hand. Each side was matching the other goal for goal in the first period with Deanmill missing a few opportunities and kicking behinds. As the siren blew the score board read Southerners 4.0(24) to Deanmill 4.4(28). When the match restarted it was the visitors who had more of the goal-scoring opportunities, but wasted many of their chances and allowed the Southerners to remain within touching distance. A strong defensive line from the home team was also a reason Deanmill did not run away with the match earlier in the tie. At the half-time break the Hawks led by eight points 5.8(38) to 5.0(30). With both sides re-energised after the extended break, the third quarter became the highest scoring period of the match as the Southerners tried to get in front in the tie, while Deanmill fought to preserve their lead. It was the Hawks who came out better at the end as the Southerners counted themselves lucky the Deanmill forwards were slightly off their game on Saturday. A series of goals and behinds from Deanmill put them at a comfortable 18-point lead heading into the three-quarter break. As fitness levels in both teams started to wane and the first game cobwebs began to show, the fourth quarter became less free-flowing footy and required a stronger physical presence on the field. As the final siren sounded, Deanmill had secured a solid win over the Southerners to start their season off well.
