Police have confirmed the victim in the fatal car crash in Pemberton on Saturday was former Manjimup shire councillor Verrell Herbert.

Mr Herbert served on Manjimup Shire Council as a west ward councillor for four years from 2015-19.

His wife Ros Herbert, who was in the car at the time, was first taken to Pemberton hospital with serious injuries but has since been transferred to Bunbury and is in a stable condition.

The crash occurred on Vasse Highway about 1.30pm when the red Holden Commodore sedan, heading south towards Pemberton, left the road and hit a tree near Pemberton Farm Chalets.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash or saw the car travelling in the area before the crash.

Anyone with dash cam footage of the crash or the vehicle prior to the crash are urged to come forward.
