The Kojonup Cougars managed to hold off an impressive Boyup Brook for a thrilling one-point win which ended 10.8 (68) to 9.13 (67) in round two of the Lower South West Football League. The match was the first of the season for the Cougars and was held at their home ground where they showed right from the start that they are not to be written off. Pouncing out of the gates from the beginning the Cougars were all over the Roos who looked at times despondent about what was happening. Scoring 3.4 in the opening term compared to the visitors’ 1.1 put the Cougars in a good position to maintain control of the game. However, Boyup Brook would not be silenced so easily and a great second quarter performance put them within touching distance of the Cougars. But accuracy in front of goal prevented the Roos from taking control of the match and allowed Kojonup to stay in the lead going into the half-time break. The scoreline at the half read Kojonup 4.7 (31) to Boyup Brook 3.9 (27). After the game picked up again, Kojonup again hit the Roos hard to try to get some breathing space between the two sides. Very good interplay between the Cougars allowed them to scythe through the Roos’ defence and kick goal after goal. The Roos were definitely not out of the fight, but with the scoreline reading 7.8 (50) to 5.9 (39) in favour of Kojonup it would take a mightly comeback to steal a win. It almost came to fruition. A stunning fourth quarter performance from Boyup Brook saw them nearly grab victory from the jaws of defeat and come agonisingly close to a great win. However, Kojonup managed to hold off the opposition and come away with a win in their first match of the season as the final siren blew. The best players included Lee Lucev, Travis Abbott, Brad Ashton, Jayden Pickett, Tyrone Roe and Trent Goodrick for Kojonup and Mathew Michael, Alex Cabassi, David Johnston, David Cowan, Gray Cowan and Fraser Mead for Boyup Brook.
