It was a festive Australia Day in the Manjimup Shire as dozens turned out to celebrate in Walpole.

The lower South West town came alive with music, food and arts stalls, citizenship ceremonies and awards for the best volunteers Manjimup has to offer.

A surprise visit from Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan made it a special experience for the eight new citizens who became Australians on Wednesday.

In her speech to the audience Ms MacTiernan said those in the Manjimup Shire were “lucky” to live in a beautiful part of the world and commended the volunteers across all industries who work to keep the Southern Forests region beautiful.

Manjimup Shire 2021 citizen of the year recipient Deanne Ventris said the region was fortunate to have people across all age groups who worked hard all year to put Manjimup and the surrounding towns on the map as a world class food bowl, environmentally pristine region and major tourism attraction.
