MLC slams “appalling” COVID-19 vaccination rates in Manjimup

Nationals South West MLC James Hayward has hit out at the low COVID-19 vaccination rates in the Shire of Manjimup, urging the State Government to consider a more extensive regional rollout. Mr Hayward said the vaccination rates in the shire were “appalling” and alternative delivery methods were urgently needed. “In the Shire of Manjimup, vaccination rates should be higher, only 29.2 per cent of eligible residents are fully vaccinated,” he said. “Having low vaccine rates and a struggling health system will be limiting factors for Western Australia to eventually transition to greater freedoms — fixing the slow uptake of the COVID-19 jab is simple and should be urgently prioritised. “The Labor Government should consider implementing measures like targeted pop-up clinics in rural and remote areas to quickly boost accessibility and uptake of the vaccine.” The AstraZeneca vaccine has been available at Manjimup GPs and pharmacies since earlier in the year, with the Pfizer vaccine offered through the Manjimup Town Hall clinic once a week since the end of July. Mr Hayward said while the State Government had suggested walk-in clinics be set up at major regional events, it was “dragging its heels” to make it happen. “We know West Australians want to roll up their sleeves and get the job done, but that is difficult to do when we have regional clinics that are only open a few times a week,” he said. “Now is the time to ramp up vaccination efforts across the State, especially when we see what’s unfortunately happening over east and how important it is to defend ourselves against COVID-19. “Labor must be more creative when it comes to vaccine accessibility, otherwise we will continue to see these low rates in communities.” Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie said rolling out the vaccine effectively was “vital for our State” and she believed the Labor Government was doing its part. “The Premier has announced the appointment of State emergency co-ordinator Chris Dawson as WA’s Vaccine Commander for an initial term to December 31 this year, who has a dedicated oversight role and will lead and drive the vaccination program,” she said. “Ultimately, the Federal Government is responsible for administering the majority of the rollout — including aged care, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and other groups. “We are doing our bit and now also picking up additional components to ensure everyone in WA who is eligible is able to get the vaccine.”
