New Bridgetown fitness studio aspires to create ‘community hub’ for wellbeing

Two passionate fitness instructors have joined forces in the heart of Bridgetown to create a “community hub” for people to workout and connect. Self First Fitness Studio opened their doors on the weekend with a brand new space offering workouts which cater to every fitness level. Owner of Self First Fitness Studio Wayne Paget-Stedman said the new “little boutique studio” came from a desire to create an atmosphere for people to fit in and have a “safe” space to explore their wellbeing journey. Mr Paget-Stedman has partnered with Susie McLachlan, who will teach restorative yoga and a meditative class in the new studio. The pair met 25 years ago when they were group fitness instructors teaching at the same leisure centre in Perth. Mr Paget-Stedman said ending up in the same regionally town together had been an amazing twist of fate. He has been part of the Bridgetown community for the past 17 years operating short-term rentals, and he moved permanently a decade ago. “I used to have really big classes in Perth — and it was impossible to get round to everybody to give them an individual approach,” Mr Paget-Stedman said. “I want to try and create something like that down here, but more in a boutique way,” he said. The studio is divided into two spaces with the front room a wellness space free of clutter for dancing, body moment, while the back dark room is for spin classes with a personal training studio. Mr Paget-Stedman said he wanted the studio to be like “day and night” with a feel-good space and a “grunt” room for the more challenging workouts. Clients can listen to music on headphones and control their own volume, which helps tailor the classes to what best suits the individual, and keeps the noise inside the studio, situated in the heart of Bridgetown on Steere Street. Mr Paget-Stedman said the pair were passionate about creating a personalised and safe environment for all levels of fitness. “We want to build a nice hub and community here, and bring a bit of a social side to it as well,” he said. “As much as we love Bridgetown, sometimes we get a little bit lost in small towns. “Everybody can come in and do what they want to do. We’ll set it up to their level, because we’re not going to be this great big studio. “It’s like my home. I love people coming into it and feeling comfortable.”
