Manjimup football product Marlion Pickett showed how versatile he is in Richmond’s 86-point thrashing of St Kilda last Thursday. The former Manjimup Tiger junior had 14 disposals and kicked a goal in their 134-48 win at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. The 29-year-old, who typically plays through the midfield, has been recently adjusting to more time spent in the backline, however coach Damian Hardwick chose to use Pickett in another role not many would have expected. The Tigers’ midfield was so dominant against the Saints, they used Pickett, and even forward Jack Riewoldt, in the ruck while number one ruckman Toby Nankervis was resting on the bench. Pickett’s athleticism even saw him win a few of the ruck contests, recording two hit-outs on the stat sheet. His second-quarter goal was also impressive from just inside the 50m arc. When Brad Hill dropped an intercept mark, Pickett pounced on the ball, side-stepped a tackle, took a few steps and launched a monster kick for a goal. Richmond have had a slow start to their 2021 campaign and will look to find some of their best form over the next few rounds as they come up against a handful of top-tier sides, including the undefeated Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday. They then face the undefeated Western Bulldogs and last year’s grand final opponents Geelong.
