Bridgetown’s Tracey Barnett has been nominated for two WA Music song of the year awards, in the Act-Belong-Commit and Blues and Roots categories.

The Act-Belong-Commit award is given to a song that reminds people of the importance of mental wellbeing, community and connectedness, as well as the journey towards attaining them.

Ms Barnett’s song Gotta Get Out was nominated for this category and she said the song was written while she was struggling with her own mental health.

“I wanted the song to reflect as closely as it could what I was going through, being stuck in my head, at the time sadly dealing with quite a few panic attacks as well,” she said.

“I just wanted it to be a little bit chaotic and frantic, but also a powerful song of hope, because it kind of has that storyline that explains what I’m going through, but then towards the end it makes it obvious that I have the strength to get out of this situation and I will, and I did.”

Her song Eyes Forward, nominated for the Blues/Roots category, has its genesis in another period of personal struggle for Ms Barnett.

“It was another one born during a pretty dark time in my life and I think it is so beautiful that something so positive and inspiring can come out of those times.

“It was therapeutic for me, sometimes when these songs are born I feel like I’m just the conduit in the middle of it, they are already out there in the world, waiting for someone to grab onto them and bring them to life.”

This is not the first time Ms Barnett has been nominated for a WAM award, having first been nominated in 2011, but she is yet to win.

Both of the nominated songs are singles from her upcoming album due to be released soon.
