Trials aim to lift standard
Bridgetown Basketball Association started the selection process for its representative teams on Sunday.
Association president Craig Goulder said the try-outs were in part an attempt to raise the profile and standard of basketball in Bridgetown.
“As one of the smallest organisations at these tournaments we punched above our weight, but we knew we needed to raise the profile of basketball if we were to get better,” he said.
Goulder said the turnout of boys was good, but the association was still lagging in female players wanting to represent the association in tournaments.
“Association member numbers have grown by similar percentages in both groups at the junior level, but we’re still not seeing as many keen female players willing to step forward to represent the association in tournaments,” he said.
“We’ve got more adjustments in how we run the association coming which we hope will encourage girls to step forward and take the chances offered to them.”
As well as selecting the teams, the association is in the process of selecting a name for its representative teams and has put six potential names and logos to association members for a vote.
Potential names include the Bridgetown Mavericks, Bridgetown Boomerangs, Bridgetown Bullets, Bridgetown Ballerz, Bridgetown Bees and Bridgetown Firetails.
