Students at Pemberton District High School attended class dressed as their favourite characters for Book Week last week.

The school staged a parade for students to show off their costumes and marked the day with a workshop hosted by children’s author and illustrator Kelly Canby, who also judged the parade.

Saint Joseph’s Catholic Primary School students also took part in the workshop, where Canby talked about creating her books. She also performed a reading of two of them — The Hole Story and Rodney, then led a creativity and illustration workshop.

The school also had a book fair during the week and raised $300 for their library.

Principal Lee Illingworth said the workshops were made possible with support from the Manjimup Shire. “I believe these types of workshops engender a love of stories and books and encourage children to view reading as their secret power,” she said.
