Golf players from around WA honour Manjimup legend Doug Edwards at Manjimup Country Club’s 77th tournament

Golf players from across WA came together in Manjimup at the weekend to honour the late Doug Edwards at the Manjimup Country Club. Each year the country club holds a Birthday Cup tournament as players come together to compete. On Sunday, the club celebrated the 77th open day, with the official day renamed the Doug Edwards Memorial to honour his life every year. Colin Muir said Edwards was an esteemed Manjimup life member of the club and golfer. Edwards, who died in September, was dedicated to teaching juniors and helping people play golf over the years. “A lot of people that came, came out of respect for Doug as a bit of a legend with the club,” Muir said. “Doug Edwards was a champion who excelled in golf, and an ambassador for the club. During the open day, a ladies’ and gents’ 18 holes individual Stableford competition was held. Players from Perth, Mandurah, Pinjarra, Bunbury, Busselton, Nyabing and local clubs attended the tournament. “The event was a great success, with players and Edwards’ family members,” Muir said. After the game, they gathered for an evening meal and presentations to remember Edwards’ life and achievements. In the tournament, the women’s net winner was Julie Davies from Melville Glades with 31 points, with Pauline Morrison from Bunbury in second place with 30 points. The women’s gross winner was Jann Mead from Boyup Brook. In the men’s competition, Frank Davies from Melville Glades was the net winner with 34 points, with Nik Kraus from Busselton in second place on a countback. Also on countback were club member Patrick Stubberfield in third and Michael Wallace from Boyup Brook in fourth. The gross winner was Adam Davey from Busselton.
