The Lower South West’s State MP has joined in the celebration of a WA institution’s centenary milestone.

Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie joined members of the Country Women’s Association of WA and parliamentary colleagues in Perth earlier this month to honour the organisation for its work in uniting women and strengthening communities.

Ms Kelsbie said she loves the 100-year history and ethos of the CWA, bringing women together and offering support wherever they may be.

Highlighting one moment in the association’s history, she said one of the first CWA challenges was to establish “rest rooms” where women and children could come together in rural areas to share food and a cup of tea.

“The CWA is inspiring and I love that women of all ages come together to share stories, support one another and to look at how to make our communities better places to live,” Ms Kelsbie said.

The MLA purchased a copy of Women of Spirit: A Centenary of CWA Stories at the event, alongside the beloved CWA Cookery Book and Household Hints, which is a household treasure in her family.

“I’ve still got my mum’s copy of her CWA Cookery Book after all these years with annotated pages and partly missing cover,” Ms Kelsbie said.

“My mum was a great cook, a skill I sadly didn’t quite inherit, and she was well known for many of the staple dishes that are within those pages.

“These books are household treasures and with them come lots of fond family memories, and great cake recipes.”

Ms Kelsbie said it was lovely to catch up with CWA WA board member and Rosa Glen-Witchliffe branch member Jessica Worrall at the event.
