Bridgetown Football Club SuperKids SuperHeroes charity event raises $50,000 in memory of Declan Kane

Bridgetown Football Club members have proven themselves fundraising heroes after raising a total of $50,000 at their SuperKids SuperHeroes charity event at the weekend, in honour of Bridgetown boy Declan Kane. With proceeds going towards The Kids’ Cancer Project — which contributes funds to childhood cancer research — the July 23 event saw a day full of football, with both a league and junior game, followed by live auctions, a superhero sprint and electric scooter races. This year also saw the club auction 30 of its “special edition” league jumpers, worn by players during the charity match. Bridgetown Football Club president Matt Watts said he was proud of the BFC community and the heartwarming efforts from everyone involved. “It’s a significant amount of money to raise for one evening, for one small club, we are certainly very proud and honoured to be a part of it and do our part to help out with a great cause,” he said. “It’s a foundation that is very close to a lot of hearts in Bridgetown and we were just overwhelmed by the support that we got and the generosity of the BFC community.” South West rock band Velvet Edge played throughout the day, with the event continuing into the night, and Mr Watts said this made for a good flow of visitors. “It was a great environment, everyone dressed up as their favourite super hero and there was all day football, there was plenty of throughput of people throughout the day,” he said. Mr Watts said the event raised $8500 last year without the auction and the special edition jumpers were something the club would look to keep going each year. Earlier this year football fields around WA were taken over by caped crusaders in memory of Declan — who died in 2017 after a four-year battle with cancer — during Auskick’s Superkids Superheroes round.
