Faster, simpler service to stock trout into farm dams and aquaponics systems

A new automated approvals process has been introduced to streamline trout stocking for personal consumption. The fast-tracked system will allow South West applicants that meet set conditions established by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to stock their dams and closed system aquaponics with trout straight out of the Pemberton Hatchery immediately. Under the new free process, applicants that ensure the translocated trout will remain in an acceptable area — ascertained by completing a simple form on the DPIRD website — will receive immediate automatic approval via email to stock trout for non-commercial purposes. DPIRD director of aquatic resource management Nathan Harrison said the reduction in red tape for applicants through the new system would allow for greater efficiency. “It will save farmers and landholders time and paperwork when they’re making arrangements to stock trout in a dam or aquaponics system on their property as well as reducing the time to process these types of approvals,” he said.
