Kojonup Cougars have secured a place in the Lower South West Football League grand final after dominating Imperials 11.13 (79) to 9.2 (56) in the preliminary final at the weekend. This Saturday’s grand final clash against Bridgetown Bulldogs will be the Cougars’ first grand final in nearly a decade. Kojonup put on an impressive performance against Imperials on Sunday, defeating the Manjimup side on neutral territory by 23 points. The wet weather and muddy conditions did nothing to slow the Cougars who played four quarters of clean, efficient football. Starting off strong, Kojonup scored 4.3 (27) to Imperials’ 2.1 (13) in the first quarter, setting the tone for the match. Imperials unleashed themselves in the second quarter, clawing their way back into the game and finishing two points behind going into half-time. Unfortunately, Imperials let the pressure get the better of them, often making rash passing decisions that resulted in easy turnovers for Kojonup. Making the most of Imperials’ lack of composure, the Cougars stretched their lead to 15 points going into the fourth quarter. However, Imperials weren’t going down without a fight and began the final term with energy befitting a preliminary final match. Scoring the first goal of the term, Imperials picked up the pace. Scores stayed stagnant for some time before a goal from Kojonup’s Dionne Woods (2) tipped the game in the Cougars’ favour before another by Mitchell Blakers (3) reinforced their lead. With five minutes remaining, Imperials needed five goals to win the match but unfortunately they succeeded only in bringing down the margin to 23 points. The final score was 11.13 (79) to 9.2 (56). Kojonup will play their first grand final since 2014 on September 9 against Bridgetown Bulldogs at Boyup Brook Oval at 2:15pm. In the reserves grand final on the same day and grounds, Imperials will play Bridgetown at 12:05pm after defeating Kojonup 10.4 (64) to 4. 5 (29) at the weekend. In the colts grand final also on Saturday in Boyup Brook, Bridgetown will play Tigers at 9:45am after defeating Southerners 10.12 (72) to 4.4 (28) at the weekend.
