Native logging ban: Small businesses impacted by timber shutdown to be handed up to $400,000

Small businesses impacted by the contentious decision to end native logging by 2024 will be handed up to $400,000 as details of the State Government’s $30 million pledge to help them transition away from the industry have emerged. Forestry Minister Dave Kelly announced on Tuesday a swathe of new funding rounds for companies affected by Premier Mark McGowan’s complete shutdown of the timber sector in 16 months time, which blindsided the South West last year. The $30 million Industry and Community Development Programs will see small businesses relying on native logging become eligible for a grant of up to $400,000 to diversify or expand into new business streams. The funding also includes up to $2 million to attract new industries — aimed at both existing and new businesses — as well as $100,000 in small grants for projects the State Government said would “stimulate regional economies and enhance the liveability of communities.” Mr Kelly said the government was committed to ensuring South West communities affected by the shutdown would continue to prosper. “Our historic decision to protect the State’s magnificent native forests creates significant opportunities for the region’s communities,” he said. “We are making $30 million in grants available to help attract new industries to the South West and develop sustainable regional economies that provide a choice of employment options not only to retain former native timber workers in the region, but to attract new workers and their families to our regions.” Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie said the funding would help to diversify the region as it transitions away from timber. The State Government has spent $80 million on its Native Forestry Transition Plan for affected businesses, including the latest $30 million. It has also committed $350 million for softwood plantations for the region. About 500 workers are expected to be affected by the decision to close the industry, which was also estimated to save more than 400,000ha of native jarrah, karri and wandoo forest in the coming years.
