The future of politics: Manjimup teenager takes centre stage at WA Youth Parliament

A passionate and intelligent Manjimup youngster proudly represented the Lower South West earlier this month as almost 60 future leaders gathered at Youth Parliament in Perth. Former Manjimup Secondary High School student Finlay Phillips Johns, 18, took his seat in the Legislative Assembly at Parliament House last week, with family, friends and State parliamentary members watching on. Joining 58 other young people from across the State, Mr Johns had the opportunity to showcase his leadership, public speaking, writing legislation and teamwork skills. Mr Johns said taking part in the 28th Western Australian Youth Parliament was a huge honour and an experience that he would never forget. “Youth Parliament has been awesome — so much fun,” he said. “It’s really inspiring to be around likeminded young people who want to see a better future. “I know lots of young people — especially in Manjimup where I live — want to make a change and this is absolutely the best way to do it. “This is not like anything I have ever done before — it’s an experience I will remember for a long time.” Mr Johns’ spoke on the Waste Responsibility and Recycling Bill 2023, and was joined by Member for Warren-Blackwood Jane Kelsbie. “To see Finlay, who’s currently working on a friend’s farm in Manjimup, on the floor of Parliament passionately talking about the importance of waste management and sustainability was amazing,” he said. “The future is looking pretty bright with engaged and articulate young people like Finlay.” Ms Kelsbie said Youth Parliament was a wonderful opportunity for young people to not only have their voices heard on issues that were relevant and important to them, but also make the most of the unique experience that allowed them to completely immerse themselves in State parliamentary processes over several days. Each year, members of Youth Parliament are given the opportunity to come together in the Houses of the Western Australian Parliament to debate Bills, giving them firsthand experience of our State’s parliamentary processes. The year-long program — which also features a residential camp during the July school holidays — is funded by the Department of Communities.
