Thousands from across Australia flock to Boyup Brook for the Harvey Dickson Rodeo

The annual CD Dodd Harvey Dickson Shindig and Rodeo arrived in Boyup Brook last Friday with a weekend of colourful and exciting rodeo, killer music beats, and camping under the stars. More than 4000 people dusted off their cowboy boots and whipped out their cowgirl hats for one of the biggest and most popular rural events of the year in the lower South West. The annual two-day event began with a sold-out shindig last Friday night where crowds danced along to the sounds of Monty Cotton, A Boy Named Cash and Bradley Hall Band, who got the crowd up and dancing despite the weather. The Saturday rodeo featured a variety of events, including the full junior rodeo and slack, grand entry parade featuring Harvey Dickson himself, live band which saw rodeo-goers partying on into the late hours of the night, and an afternoon full of classic rodeo activities like bull rides, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and team roping. Shane Dickson kicked off the grand entry parade with the Australian national anthem and a beautiful rendition of Peace in the Valley by Elvis Presley, standing side-by-side on the parade ute with her father, Harvey Dickson. The full event rodeo, guided by the rules of the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association and conducted by Double Barrel Entertainment principals Mark and Jo Kestle, saw 270 entries from competitors from across the country. The crowd saw an amazing performance by Kit Le Lievre in the bareback horse riding who secured first place, while Melissa Foster went all out in the barrel race to secure the win on her horse Lethal Bob. Cody Brennan also had a great event day, securing first place in the saddle bronc, while Amanda Oversby secured first place in the steer undercoating on her horse Magnet. Event co-organiser Ms Jo Kestel said the event was a resounding success despite the poor weather. “Even though it was freezing, it didn’t deter the crowd,” she said. “Everyone still showed up and had a great time. “The shindig went off like a cracker, aided by Bradley Hall who really gets the crowd going. “It was even a really great event for the vendors, they always do so well.” Ms Kestel said she thanked major sponsors CD Dodd and Keegan Transport for their support, and Harvey Dickson for hosting the event on such amazing grounds. “And a huge thank you to all of the rodeo fans who keep coming and supporting DBE and rodeo across Western Australia.” DBE is planning to host an upcoming Australia Day rodeo event and will be back at Harvey Dickson’s in Boyup Brook for the annual easter rodeo for 2023.
