A free supportive cancer care course is making its way to the South West that offers evidence-based exercise and meditative courses to support cancer patients and their carers. The Cancer Council WA Life Now Program is a free six-week meditation course for people affected by cancer and will be available online and in-person in Bunbury and Busselton. An in-person exercise course will be held at Maximum Results Exercise Physiology in Bunbury on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30pm to 1:30pm from February 13, while a meditation course will run at Katie Yoga, Fig Tree Lane in Busselton on Thursdays from 11:00am to 12:00pm from February 9. Online meditation classes are available on Thursdays from 10:00am to 11:00am from February 16 and Tuesdays from 6:00pm to 7:00pm from February 21. Cancer patient and recent Life Now Exercise participant Helen Masters said the Life Now Program helped her feel better, both mentally and physically. “Spending time around others each week who understood what I was going through helped to motivate me and made me feel supported and that I wasn’t alone,” she said. “The classes also made me feel a lot stronger within my body – especially the boxing drills. I felt like they were setting me up for success.” The 62-year-old from Busselton — first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 before undergoing surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy treatment — said her exercise physiologist recommended the 12-week Life Now Exercise course to help with her rehabilitation. “I was already receiving support from Cancer Council WA, including counselling and reflexology, so to be able to access free exercise classes too was a bonus. “Thankfully I’m now in remission, but the regular exercise routine is something I have continued as part of a healthy lifestyle.” Cancer Council WA Life Now Coordinator Claire Duffy said they knew through numerous studies that there were a range of benefits from attending classes such as exercise, meditation, mindfulness, yoga and tai chi, including reducing anxiety and stress. “It’s wonderful to hear first-hand from people like Helen just how Life Now courses have improved their lives.” Registrations — which are essential — can be done through the Cancer Council WA website or call on 13 11 20 for more information.
