Manjimup’s The Wild Beyond cidery receives prestigious trophy from internationally recognised organisation

A South West cidery is making waves in the brewing business, recently winning a prestigious award at the biggest cider show in Australia. One year ago NewLeaf Orchard took a leap of faith, launching its cider brand, The Wild Beyond. After facing the challenge of mastering the craft of cider-making while navigating the ups and downs of running a small farming business, owners Dean and Kate Baker are now seeing the fruits of their labour. The Wild Beyond’s Barrel-Aged Raspberry Sour Cider — which first hit the market this year after two years in the creation process — was recognised as Australia’s best specialty cider at the internationally respected Australian Cider Awards in October. Mr Baker had been producing sparking fruit juices for more than 10 years and said it was validating to receive the award — something he hopes to use to increase visibility of the brand. “With the time and skill that goes into making the cider, it’s great to get the award,” he said. “It’s an achievement that reflects not just the passion and perseverance of two people, but also the outstanding quality of produce that comes from our region.” The Wild Beyond’s was the only West Australian cider to walk away with a trophy in 2024. Mr Baker said he wanted to change the perception of cider as a sweet drink for a younger palate. “We’re trying to change the narrative ... focus on farmer craft,” he said. “Our cider is more like a wine or champagne — to be enjoyed as something different to start with before moving on to something more easy drinking.” Mr Baker told the Times they had “a slew of products” they’d like to bottle in the coming months and were in the process of opening a cellar door. “We’ll be doing a small volume of different takes on our award cider,” he said. “Our aim is to create a premium product — experiment with what apples and cider can be.”
