Warren Health Service secures birthing pool to give women the option to water birth

Pregnant women in the Lower South West now have more options for the birth of their child thanks to the Warren Health Service securing a birthing pool. The hospital’s auxiliary has donated a portable “birth pool in a box” which will give local women with low-risk pregnancies the option to water birth. A water birth sees the mother immersed in warm water while she undergoes labour, with research suggesting the method makes the experience less painful and stressful. WA Country Health Service regional clinical midwifery consultant Amy Gumbrell said the decision to acquire the birthing pool was based on patient feedback. “Our midwives are committed to providing patient-centred care for expectant women and families,” she said. “As well as prenatal, birthing and postnatal care, it’s fulfilling for our dedicated team to support women with another birthing option close to home. “It’s a tremendous result and we look forward to supporting more women who are able to water birth close to home.” Women wanting to discuss their eligibility for water birth should contact the Warren Blackwood Midwifery Practice Group by phoning 9777 0300 or 0436 005 881.
