Family pay tribute to Manjimup ‘legend’ Joe Macarlino following workplace death

The family of a young Manjimup electrician who died in a workplace accident have spoken of their heartbreak at losing a “carefree” soul who was “so, so loved”. Joe Macarlino was found unresponsive by police at a house in the South West town on April 21 and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 21-year-old, who was six months into his apprenticeship, is believed to have been electrocuted while working and police said WorkSafe is investigating. His death has led to an incredible outpouring of support from the grieving community, with his girlfriend Chelsea Brown among those paying heartfelt tributes. “He knew how to make everyone smile and would always make sure my days were good,” she said. “He was everything you could ask for in a partner and best friend. He was so, so loved.” Mr Macarlino’s family said his carefree and easy-going nature was what made him so well loved in the community. “I know everyone says this, but everyone who met him loved him,” they said in a statement. “He had a big group of friends and he was really loved. He was really, really loved.” Mr Macarlino was known for enjoying all things outdoors and his family saluted his resilient nature. “He’d never be scared to do anything. He was a bit of a legend,” they said. After news of his death broke, the family said they were thankful as they were inundated with support and comfort, adding it showed just how much Mr Macarlino would be missed. “We definitely would like to add a huge thanks to the Manjimup community, all of the staff at the Manjimup hospital,” they said. “I guess coming from a small town we do know everyone, so you know a couple of nurses that were at the hospital ... we know they went above and beyond to do what they could and we're so thankful.”
