West Australian opera singer Claire Condipodero grew up watching Carols in the Domain, so being able to perform at the Christmas event alongside other opera stars is “really special”.

Condipodero and fellow WA opera singers, husband and wife duo Lachlann Lawton and Chelsea Burns, will be representing the State on the national stage with The Young Stars of Australian Opera when Sydney’s Domain lights up with the spirit of Christmas on Saturday night.

The talented group feel privileged to share the stage with the likes of The Wiggles, Marcia Hines, Kate Miller-Heidke, Mark Vincent, Budjerah and musical theatre stars.

For Condipodero, it’s her second time performing at the magical event.

“It’s such a beautiful and joyous event. For me, it’s really a highlight of the year to perform in Carols and share the joy of Christmas and represent WA,” she said.

“I’m really excited to be back. It’s just so much fun. And it’s an iconic event that I grew up watching. So to be part of it now is really special.”

Condipodero will be wearing a phenomenal red gown created by Perth designer Steph Audino, which weighs a whopping 10kg.

“I’ve booked an extra suitcase. It’s very, very heavy. Steph Audino is just amazing. Her designs are hard to beat. I think for a performer, they’re really a dream to wear,” she said.

Lawton said Christmas time has always been special to his family, so to get to sing with his wife, whom he met through performing, was a “particular treat” as they don’t get the chance very often.

“Watching Carols in the Domain was always something special we did together, so this opportunity is especially meaningful,” Burns added.

Performing at Carols caps off a big year for Condipodero and Lawton, who both recently starred in The Pirates of Penzance, which was a sell-out season.

The trio also said they hope the event can bring a message of hope and peace in the lead-up to Christmas, following the horrific terror attack at Bondi Beach on Sunday.

“Carols in the Domain has always been about coming together in song and joy,” Lawton said.

“After the Bondi attack, we need that now more than ever. Events like this are important to show everyone is welcome, no matter who you are or where you come from.”

Condipodero added: “It’s certainly not the easiest time of year for some, so hopefully we can spread some joy on the stage.”

In its 43rd year, Carols in the Domain has helped raise millions of dollars for The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal, supporting those in need during the festive season.
